Pot size matters: a meta-analysis of the effects of rooting volume on plant growth
نویسندگان
چکیده
Themajority of experiments in plant biology use plants grown in some kind of container or pot.We conducted a meta-analysis on 65 studies that analysed the effect of pot size on growth and underlying variables. On average, a doubling of the pot size increased biomass production by 43%. Further analysis of pot size effects on the underlying components of growth suggests that reduced growth in smaller pots is caused mainly by a reduction in photosynthesis per unit leaf area, rather than by changes in leafmorphology or biomass allocation. The appropriate pot sizewill logically depend on the size of theplants growing in them.Basedonvarious lines of evidencewe suggest that an appropriate pot size is one inwhich theplant biomass does not exceed 1 g L. In current research practice ~65% of the experiments exceed that threshold. We suggest that researchers need to carefully consider thepot size in their experiments, as small potsmaychange experimental results and defy the purpose of the experiment. متن کاملThe Effect of Cycocel and Pot Size on Vegetative Growth and Flowering of Zinnia (Zinnia elegans)
Zinnia is a very attractive and beautiful ornamental plant due to the diversity of color and flowering period. The effect of cycocel and pot size was studied on growth and flowering of zinnia in a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete design with two factors: cycocel at 3 levels (0, 1000 and 2000 ppm) and pot size at 4 levels (10, 12, 14 and 16 cm) with 12 treatments and 3 replica...

Background & Aim: Clematis is an ornamental and medicinal plant that is primarily planted as an ornamental plant. Clematis orientalis is native to Asia and Central Europe, used as an antiseptic and refrigerant. The propagation of Clematis is very important. In this study, the effects of plant growth regulators on rooting and growth of the plants in vitro cult...
متن کاملEffect of Plant Growth Regulators on Rooting of Henna (Lawsonia Inermis L.)
Studies have shown that rooting substrate is one of the effective factors at rooting of hard rhizogenetic plant such as Henna. The purpose of this study is to determine an appropriate concentration of Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA), Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) and salicylic acid (SA) on Rooting of Henna. Present study showed that there was a great variation in most of the measured characters at P<...

Oleander (Nerium oleander L.) is cultivated recently as a flowering pot plant and therefore abundant propagation plant material for commercial use is of great importance. Oleander is a vegetatively propagated ornamental plant valued for its evergreen foliage and showy terminal flower clusters that are available in different colours. Studies have shown that rooting, plant growth regulat...
